The Institute of Physics Belgrade is carrying out several significant scientific projects, and one of the most prominent, with potentially the widest impact on the development of researchers and research directions, is the project “Hidden Phases in 2D-Quantum Materials,” led by Dr. Nenad LazareviΔ. A grant of β¬2.5 million has been awarded for activities that will increase the competitiveness of the Center for Solid-State Physics and New Materials, as well as the Institute of Physics. This is also the largest individual grant ever received by the Institute.
The “Hidden Phases in 2D-Quantum Materials” (HIP-2D-QM) project, conducted at the Institute of Physics, establishes a new unit for Structural Characterization, integrated into the Center for Solid-State Physics and New Materials. This new unit will work synergistically and complementarily with the existing units for Solid-State Physics, Nanostructures, 2D Materials, and Electronic Materials.
HIP-2D-QM adds advanced Fourier-based total scattering methods to the portfolio of techniques that already include Raman, infrared, and Brillouin spectroscopy, spectroscopic ellipsometry, AFM/STM, and magnetotransport. The project also promotes the use of large-scale research facilities by researchers at the Institute of Physics for materials research and establishes a cohesive training center, open to researchers from Serbia, the Western Balkans, and Southeast Europe.
This initiative strengthens the Center for Solid-State Physics and New Materials at the Institute of Physics as a center of excellence and enhances collaboration with industrial partners in the European Research Area (ERA). The project fosters networking, knowledge circulation, and mobility, with the goal of sustainably attracting talent and strengthening the research and innovation ecosystem in Serbia. HIP-2D-QM provides a sustainable path to advancing a culture of excellence, performance, and visibility at the Institute of Physics, enabling accelerated integration into the ERA.
Through comprehensive training measures covering research, innovation, and administrative channels, HIP-2D-QM fosters competitiveness and collaboration, facilitating a strong pursuit of research funding. Under the leadership of the ERA Chair, a permanent world-class research group will lead the Institute of Physics in the field of quantum materials, driving institutional reforms aligned with ERA priorities.
The characterization of hidden phases in kagome metals, materials that are in global focus, drives the project’s mechanisms, strengthening connections between different Institute of Physics centers and enhancing collaboration across ERA, tackling the most significant challenges in materials science. The project also opens up new opportunities for research into ultrafast phenomena, which are critical for the competitiveness of ERA.
